Small change can make a big difference.
Through the VECustomers Share program, Volunteer Energy Cooperative members help support projects and organizations that strengthen communities across the VEC service area. Participating members simply allow their monthly electric bill to be rounded up to the next whole dollar, with the extra change placed into the VECustomers Share fund.
The average member contributes about $5 per year — and never more than $11.88 annually — but together, those small contributions create meaningful impact each month. Grants from the program help support scout troops, youth sports, senior citizen groups, PTAs, civic organizations and many other community-focused efforts.
VECustomers Share is administered through an independent board made up of volunteers from communities across the VEC service area. Neither VEC employees nor members of the VEC Board of Directors serve on the grant review board. The board meets monthly to review applications and award funding to eligible organizations.
Since the program began in 2001, more than $9 million has been awarded to local organizations and projects. Most grants are under $1,000, helping support a wide variety of community needs throughout the region.
Apply for a Grant
VECustomers Share provides grant funding for projects and programs that benefit communities within the Volunteer Energy Cooperative service area. Applications are reviewed by an independent board of volunteers from across the region, and grants may be fully funded, partially funded or declined based on available funding and community impact.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit and community organizations serving VEC communities. Funding is intended to support projects that provide broad community benefit and is generally considered supplemental funding alongside other fundraising or support sources.
The program does not fund:
- Political candidates or political activities
- Electric bill assistance
- Government-funded schools
- Religious organizations
- Salaries
- Cemetery upkeep
- Animal control or animal benefit programs
Projects connected to schools or churches may still qualify if the program is open to the public and provides clear community-wide benefit.
To apply:
- Complete the application fully and clearly
- Include a detailed explanation of how funds will be used
- List other funding sources supporting the project
- Attach no more than five additional pages of supporting information
Applications must be received at the VEC Corporate Office in Decatur by the last working day of the month to be considered at the next board meeting. Organizations awarded funding may be required to provide documentation showing funds were used for the approved purpose.
