Keeping Power Safe & Reliable

Trees and vegetation are one of the leading causes of power outages and safety hazards. VEC’s vegetation management program helps keep power lines clear, improves reliability and allows crews safe access to maintain and restore service across our system.

Why Vegetation Management Matters

Trees growing too close to power lines can:

  • Cause power outages
  • Create safety hazards
  • Slow restoration efforts during storms
  • Damage electric equipment

Maintaining clear rights-of-way helps reduce outages, improve reliability and keep our communities safe.

What You Can Expect

VEC uses industry-approved trimming and pruning practices designed to protect both the electric system and the long-term health of trees. Crews may trim, prune or remove vegetation near power lines as needed to maintain safe clearances.

  • Directional pruning methods
  • ISA-certified arborists on staff
  • Debris removal during routine trimming
  • Emergency restoration work may leave debris for property owners to remove

Understanding Utility Easements

VEC maintains a 40-foot utility easement along overhead primary power lines — 20 feet on each side of the line. These easements allow crews to safely maintain vegetation and access electric facilities when repairs are needed.

Key reminders:

  • Buildings and permanent structures are not allowed in easements
  • Trees planted near lines may require trimming or removal
  • Access to utility equipment must remain clear

Right Tree. Right Place.

Careful planning can help avoid future trimming and improve reliability.

Distance from Power Lines Recommended Trees
25 - 40 feet Small trees
40 - 60 feet Medium trees
60+ feet Large trees

When planting near power lines, choose trees and shrubs that will not grow into overhead lines or interfere with underground equipment.

Herbicide Use

VEC uses EPA-approved herbicides as part of its integrated vegetation management program to control incompatible vegetation and maintain safe access to power lines. Applications are performed by licensed professionals using targeted, low-volume methods designed to minimize environmental impact.

Tree & Power Line Safety

  • Never trim trees near power lines yourself
  • Stay away from downed lines and limbs touching lines
  • Keep children and pets away from trees contacting power lines
  • Contact VEC if you see hazardous vegetation near electric facilities
